NZCA welcomes new Government to office

NZCA welcomes new Government to office- Publication date: 12 November 2008

Te Tari Puna Ora o Aotearoa / NZ Childcare Association has welcomed the incoming Government and congratulates the National party on their successful election campaign.

“The Association looks forward to establishing a productive working relationship with the incoming Ministers. We are aware of the difficult economic climate but we hope the Government will keep the ECE strategic plan on track”, says NZCA President Judy Kaa. “The strategic plan is vital to ensuring quality educational outcomes for children and families. High quality ECE is an investment in our future.”

National’s ECE policies during the election campaign were met with a mixed reaction from the ECE community. “We support National’s proposal to reduce staffing ratios for under two year olds, but we are concerned about how the new Government will help the sector meet the ongoing challenge of teacher supply.”

“We will work with the National-lead Government and we’re sure that the position we bring to the table will lead to robust discussion about the future of early childhood education. In particular, we want to keep the focus on teacher qualifications. A body of research shows that qualified teachers ensure the best possible outcomes for children and families.”

Judy also acknowledged the impact of the outgoing Government’s policies. “The previous Government showed how much it valued the important work of the sector through 20 hours free ECE, the ECE strategic plan and regulating teacher qualification targets. All of these have contributed significantly to raising quality in the sector” explains Judy. “I would particularly like to recognise the contribution of Ministers Mallard, Maharey and Carter whose work lifted the professional status of ECE teachers.”

“The outgoing Government raised the bar in terms of quality ECE and we hope the new Government will show the same level of commitment.”
