Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education)


Our Diploma of Teaching (ECE) (PDF 381 kb) allows you to learn, teach and qualify at the same time.

NZCA Diploma students

The programme

  • Is three years long, comprising Stages 1, 2 and 3
  • Has 12 modules with each module taught in a ten week term
  • Is centre-based
  • Is bicultural and based on Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Involves on-going assessment, written and in practice 
  • Is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority and the New Zealand Teachers Council and leads to teacher registration (Qualification code: PCEE03)

 

Centre based learning

The centre base model allows you to use theory and research to shape your teaching practice. You can be a volunteer or employed at a centre while you study.

 

Course requirements

Course requirements include:

  • Weekly tutorials (6.5 hours per week = 1 day)
  • Self-directed study (recommended 8.5 hours per week)
  • Supervised teaching experience in the centre (15 hours per week minimum)
  • Practicums in other early childhood settings, one per year
  • Attend a minimum of 80% of tutorial sessions, carry out written assignments and complete set tasks. 

Teaching bases

The programme is offered at our 16 teaching bases throughout New Zealand.
